Don't they have timing tags on board the bikes or something? Even your neighbourhood triathlon has RFID chips to confirm start and finish times, so surely something like that wouldn't be beyond the scope of a pro tour event. I've no idea how the timing mixup happened, but it's definitely changed the plot of the race. Haven't been able to watch today's stage, but it looks an interesting finish profile.
