I didn't get my first bike with QR's until just a few years ago, when I took up cycling as a middle-aged fart. I like QR's! I have not had so much as one issue with QR's. I'm not changing!
The bike industry keeps coming up with solutions to problems which don't exist- and by doing so, often create real problems, that then require more solutions; and end up creating even more problems because of incompatibility and differing standards.
First it's disc brakes; then through-axles to deal with the overblown and unnecessary power of the disc brakes; then electronic shifting; then number of rear cogs multiplying faster than bunnies; etc. ad-infinitum.... And meanwhile, when you actually ride your $10K technological-marvel of a plastic wonder-bike with computers and batteries and servos and hydraulics, your ride and enjoyment of it are no different than they were on a simple decent quality road bike 30 or 40 years ago.
All this garbage only alienates me- and instead of enticing me to buy new bikes, it drives me further into the classic and vintage market. They may be pulling the wool over the eyes of some youngsters who have never had the opportunity to ride C&V; and who thus assume that old bikes are sub-par, because they aren't laden with all the latest crap- but I think once someone has experienced the difference, they soon realize that simplicity is actually more conducive to cycling and their enjoyment of it.
Modern bikes are going in the opposite direction- obscuring the simple elegance of man and simple machine, for electronics and gizmoes and frills of dubious value, more suited to those who are more interested in the equipment, than the use and enjoyment of it.
