The Wire was great, but it was like a different show every season, so when it as over it didn't feel like a huge loss. There have also been some really strong contenders recently (Sopranos, Dexter, Deadwood, Breaking Bad, True Detective, etc.). But for some reason I don't see them having the nostalgia value as some older TV. For instance, and I know this can be a divisive show, when the West Wing was finished it was like I had lost a friend. It might have had more to do with having shared it as a common experience with my parents for so long, but there really was a hole there (notwithstanding the final season shenanigans).
