Yes, given the vintage of your system I suspect that you have a length of housing running up to a stop on the derailleur. Modern derailleurs lack that stop, so the housing will have to go.
This isn't a real problem, and is easily solved by running the bare wire under the bottom bracket shell and up the the FD pinch bolt. No guide is needed, but if you're concerned, you can slip in a length of plastic tubing or cable housing, or simply a piece of tape on the BB where the cable rubs. The cable will immediately find the shortest route (cables are smart that way), and stay there without help, so no actual guide is needed.
