LOL is right! I ride road bikes with 700x23 in the city every day and avg about 80 miles/week and nothing has broken. And I've had 1 on road flat in the past 5 years of riding. You are getting some very poor information.

Plenty of road bike that are well suited for city "roads". If you want more rugged, cyclocross bikes are a good compromise and most take at least 700x32 and up to 700x40. But from my experience anything over 700x25 is truly necessary on paved roads.

But if you prefer flat bar/hybrid bike those are both good choices. I have friends with each of those bikes and honestly I really like both.
