Makers put some over travel in the slackest lever position. The trim there is adjusted using the "slack side" limit (low in front/high in back).
This is also why the trim has to be adjusted for the other gears while in the slack position. So, if the FD is trimmed correctly and shifts smoothly in both directions, the slack in low is meaningless.
