Steer tube removal

I have an old Rock Shoc with a 11/8" steer tube. I would like to remove it and replace it with a 1" tube. I want to do this to build up a single speed on an old frame that I have.
I have access to a lathe so I would custom machine the replacement tube.
Does anyone know how they are retained in the stanchions? I could just cut it off and tap the hole and thread the replacement to fit. However I would like to determine if it is possible to press it out. Or remove it by an easier means.
