I will sometimes use a dab of thick greaase to hold things in place while I try to align. It's tough with that setup but if you could get the spring tabs in the right place on the cover and hold the tension with a small shim, you could get it on then pull out the shim, then tighten. I use a sparkplug gap tool I have as little "fingers".
