I have rather expensive 16g carbon fiber cages on my rather expensive carbon fiber bike. I also have rather cheap ($6) cages on my "trail" bike since weight is not at critical.
I've never had a bottle fall out on its own on either. If your water bottle is loose with a inexpensive metal cage... bend it slightly to make it fit tighter.
