There is a bus stop near my workplace, which I can observe from my window, and so far, no one has been run over by a bus at this location in all the years that I have been observing this bus stop.
In our local bus guidelines, it wants the bicycle rider to inform the bus driver that they will be unloading a bike, giving the driver advance notification of a more extended stop.
A professional driver should always be aware of what is in front of their bus before leaving the stop, but tight bus schedules, and repetitive behavior can and will eventually overcome some bus operator's driver training.
Just a couple of weeks ago, a "highly intoxicated" individual was ran over, and eventually succumbed to his injuries after stepping/staggering out in front of a local bus at another location, just as the bus was leaving a stop, it was the first ped killed by a bus, in our area, that I can remember.
