And until the OP is Greg/Eddy, he deserves to have hardware that meets him where he is without judgment from the "Just HTFU! " peanut gallery. I started on triples, and am glad I did. I will probably go back to them eventually.

Like Drew posted, don't forget that one can always install a super-tight cassette with a triple and get just as tough of a low gear as the other folks in their club if they want it.
