OK, Mr. "don't get your undies in a bunch just because I made an ignorant and arrogant statement". Does your wise theory apply to a 65 year old who has been riding a lot since he was in his 20s and rides as much as he can - or cares too? Is he going to get stronger? Explain how. How about the guy with bad knees - who also rides as much as he can or cares to? Or anyone for that matter who rides as much as he/she cares to or is able to, and just wants to enjoy the ride at their current state of fitness? Should they spend more time than they wish to just to get fitter? Should they sacrifice the tenuous health of their joints just to push those big gears?

You'll learn as the years go by and you get to know a variety of people and get some life experience that there's a lot of reasons people ride. Most just enjoy it and fitness and strength is not a purpose, but a nice side benefit. Besides, depending on their age, current state of fitness and time budgeted, not everyone can get significantly fitter, nor does everyone care to get significantly fitter. Nobody cares about meeting some arbitrary standard of gearing that is approved by the internet gear gods. They just want to ride and enjoy it. Low gears help them accomplish that goal.

Hope you learned something. You'll also learn as the years go by that being defensive about critiques by people who might know more than you doesn't aid learning.
