I do one legged drills about once a week during the winter. They're tough. I can't imagine doing it for 8 miles.
I heard of that as an excercise to improve pedaling smoothness and did it a few times.
My right pedal broke off once at 6:00 AM in quiet suburban neighborhood en route to work 10 miles away. I called a cab to haul me and the bike to work. On the bright side, a thunderstorm arose during the drive, so I avoided that.
