Seems like it would make a fine commuter. It even comes with 36 spoke wheels, which are theoretically stronger than what most bikes come with. The 14-34 cassette and triple crank will give you plenty of range for any terrain. 700x28 tires are a good fit for commuting. I say go for it.

Be prepared for some mild assembly and initial adjustments after receiving it. My BD bike came with wheels that were out of true, a loose headset, shifters that needed some slight tuning, and brakes that were not fully attached to the frame, for example. Nothing overly difficult, but just to make you aware of what type of assembly may be required on your end.
