I'd check out your RD, too. Sorry, rear derailleur. My XT was working well until I replaced a chainring, chain, and cassette on my bike. Cleaned the der and found that the spring was worn out/stretched/whatever. Worked fine when it was packed with dirt/grass. Not enough tension to keep it in the low gears. Just a thought, since your bike's used.
