The spokes are 2.0 straight steel ones, and the rim is a 700 32 hole Mavic A319 with double eyelets (the Alex rim had single eyelets)
Funny to say, but even just transfering the spokes over to the new rim, made me look more at spoke patterns and do a whole bunch of reading on wheel building. I'm somewhat adept at most other bike mechanical stuff, but really have only done rudimentary rim truing, and basically have always had someone else check over my wheels before trips.
Why not switch to double-butted spokes while you're at it? It doesn't seem like you need the extra beef of thick straight-gauge spokes, and since they're less likely to break from overtensioning, the rims become the weak link. If nothing else, you could just use the butted spokes on the NDS, allowing you to use lower tensions overall.
