Don't wait too late on the chain. If the chain gets too worn, it will ruin the cassette. Maeasure a 12 inch length of it from pin to pin. More than 1/16th inch over the standard 12 and out it goes.
I measure the chain once a month when I oil the chain. Its still under 0.5% stretch. Keep in mind that the bike sees basically the best conditions possible, and I keep it well lubricated. Given the mileage on the drivetrain, I'm extra paranoid about it.
