I'm still riding 70's vintage hubs that are as smooth as new (or better) serviced every season of use that have seen lots & lots of miles.

Buy a Park (or similar) chain wear gauge (chains do not stretch, they wear) and replace at the .75 mark. Ride, lube, clean and proceed.

I have found that once a year is plenty for hubs I use regularly with one exception. Winters are really tough on gear and I may overhaul my hubs more often depending on the conditions.
