OP - I've got two helmets, one Rudy Project that I use for primarily winter commuting. I sized up on that one so I could comfortably wear head coverings underneath. I also have my headlight semi-permanently strapped to that one. For recreational road riding I have a Giro Atmos.
For shoes, I have an inexpensive (I think they were about $65) pair of Shimano MTB shoes to use with my winter commuter. I also have a pair of Lake winter boots with SPDs if the weather gets really cold. For recreational riding I'm now using Bont Vapor + shoes, though I have gone through Giro, Sidi, Carnac, PI and Shimano road shoes in a search for a comfortable, or at least well-fitting, shoe.
