The writer spends alot of time on describing the advertising and how the message is almost the same today. Maybe if the automakers opened more factories in Detroit, they would suddenly find themselves with more customers instead of wasting millions on marketing.
The problem is that even if they open more factories in Detroit the workers would still need to ride their bikes to work as they probably wouldn't be able to afford the car.. or if they can then they wouldn't be able to afford the insurance. I think the recession has made people more aware of if they maintain their existing car properly they don't need a new one every 2 to 4 years. I don't know that they are falling out of love with the car but they are definitely not replacing them like disposable items that they seemed to be before the recession.
