Kickstands depend on the bike. On a lightweight racing bike why would anyone add a kickstand? On a utility bike or a touring bike, a center kickstand is a nice piece of equipment to have. On a recreational bike it seems like a good idea if you add a kickstand so you don't have to lean it against something. The only folks who would shun you anyway are ultra fit racers and if you are new to biking they are going to shun you whether you have a kickstand or not so don't worry about it.
