Yes, they are "uncool" (according to "serious" cyclists) along with dork disks, reflectors, and hybrids. They add a few hundred grams, and some consider them unsafe in case they open while riding (especially when doing MTB), or come loose and end up in your spokes or pedals. Not to mention that they can scratch up your paint where installed.

Is the loss of dignity worth it? Personally I have one! I often bike casually, and stop here and there, and don't want to throw my nice bike on the ground or find something to lean it on. And with a bunch of bikes in the garage, much easier to just stand them up instead of bike racks or wall hangers. And actually nobody ever stopped me to point out and laugh at my stand

And if you are a strong biker, it can doubly humiliate a "serious roady" when you pass him with your hybrid with a kickstand!
News Flash:

No "serious cyclist" or "serious roady (sic)" would give a rat's behind whether you or anyone has and uses a kickstand, or whether "you pass him with your hybrid with a kickstand". The question would not arise in such cyclists' minds because they wouldn't even notice you save possibly to extend a friendly (if sometimes subtle) greeting.

I think you may have meant to refer to "poseurs" and/or Cat 6 Racers.
