This is how I do it.

I just found this thread. Just last night, I had the Park Tool CC-3 tell me my chain is .75% worn, but then I checked the chain with two stainless steel rulers, and it was okay. So from now on, I'll be keeping an eye on that chain by checking with the ruler every weekend.
