Poor technique or too much pork?

Hello all, newby getting back onto the saddle.

I have a question that I hope the answer isn't too brutal. Haven't biked in several years and didn't do a whole lot before that. For the past couple of winters I did some spin classes for conditioning. Last year in the middle of the workout I broke the crankshaft on the spin bike. Before I put my bike away a few years ago I did a fair amount of road riding getting ready for an 11 mile race portion of a relay. It's a Spec. Hard Rock circa 2000. I pulled it out and dropped it off for a complete tuneup this winter. Looked except the shaft on my bike was wore out, on the verge of breaking. Ok, the spin bike is a moderately used bike so I'm sure it had wear. But two bikes, same problem? Assuming it's me, is it too much sustained power versus proper spinning speed or too much pork on the saddle? I'm 6' and during this time I was 210-215 lbs.

I bought the hard rock in '99 or '00 new and have maybe 500 miles on it.

I've got my weight down to 200 now and I know I have a lot to learn about proper technique. Thanks for the help.
