Aren't there people who take care of the cobbles and make sure the sections don't get too smooth? For example, if a farmer's truck accidentally lost a pile of dirt on the cobbles, these people would shovel and sweep it away rather than have that section become easier to ride on.
I saw where the race organizers plowed the grass next to the Arenberg section to keep the riders from going off the cobbles.
