It is fairly common to see that connector to attach the charger. In fact, on scooter-style electric bikes, it is almost standard.
The scenario you point out can happen -- and it did to me thru my own carelessness. The result was it blew a fuse inside the battery pack. When the fuse was replaced, everything worked and I felt very fortunate. With no fuse, could have been a lot worse - fried BMS and/or damaged cells.
