Mrs. Grouch and I used to own a Rans Screamer take-apart. It was equipped with "cable splicers" that made it possible to break and re-connect the cables. I thought that I'd have to fiddle with the shift indexing every time that I broke the cable but that turned out not to be necessary.

The cable splicers used a second standard shift cable so you could use 2 short cables that you can find anytime, anywhere instead of one long, special order, tandem cable.
