There's absolutely nothing wrong with using the pedals you like. I used Shimano A520 pedals on a $3,000 road bike for years, and only begrudgingly changed to road pedals to get a power meter. They work just as well; with good shoes, I couldn't tell you which ones I was using in a blind test.
The SPD pedals you're looking at will be a little heavier and less expensive than typical road pedals, and it will be easier to walk around off the bike, like from your front door to the road.
