If you lock down the freewheel removal tool with a qr skewer or axle nut, a BIG wrench works just fine. You have to loosen the skewer or back off the nut as soon as the freewheel breaks free even a slight amount but after that they come off easily. A bench vise is certainly a good method but not the only one that works well.
