I suspect that the idea is intended for lightly loaded, high speed bearings. These are the ones that would most benefit from eliminating the viscous drag of grease. In industrial applications, ball bearings have staggering no/low wear life, so I doubt the issue if wear in the "brake zone" would make that much difference.
