I talk (out loud) to myself quite a bit. I've found that I can sometimes only reason something through if I try to articulate it. For instance, in the bike overhaul class I just finished at the co-op I would find myself looking at, say, a shifter cable and saying something like "so, if you came out of this little hole, then you must go back in from the opposite direction. Right?" Okay, I guess that's talking to the cable more so than to myself, but you get the idea. I didn't realize I was doing this out loud until the class assistant pointed it out and said it had taken him a while to figure out that I wasn't talking to him. Anyway, I do something similar on the bike when approaching complicated intersections and the like.
