chiming in to say that I also loathe Timbuk2. I tried a Banjo brothers bag but it compressed my chest too much compared to a two strap. I've yet to try my new MW messenger but I can't imagine it'd be too much different.
I feel a backpack is the way to go if you're going on a ride. Messengers are great for travel / kicking about, though.
