I just won a new old stock 1981 American Flyer Emperor 12 speed at auction for $10 (it also came with a used schwinn s-15). I know I got a great deal, but when I tried doing some research on the American Flyer (ironically made in Japan ), very little popped up. I weighed the bike and found it to be 29 lbs. (+ or - 1 pound). It seems fast to me, but my previous road bike was a ccm formula with seriously out of true wheels and and very worn, dry rotted tires. I was going to true up its wheels and buy new tires, but then I found this bike. I am looking to do some local races just for fun am wondering if the American Flyer bike will make me at allow me to be reasonably competitive. If anyone has any information on this bike that would be really appreciated.
