Once a rider knows their limitations - relative ability, there is not a big reason to race other than money. Before that it is as simple as two kids in the playground challenging each other to a race.

Not really, once a rider "knows" these things. More when a rider achieves them. And I feel like I could race a looong looong time and continue to improve, just perhaps not physically.
