I own a pay as you go cell phone and very rarely use it. I never take it on the bike for commutes or longer trips, but would probably take it on a multi-day trip. This weekend I drove my sister-in-law's minivan from Miami to NYC and took the cell phone, which I used once, to tell my nephew what time he might expect me in Phila, so they could plan dinner.
I could see taking a phone on a multi day cycling trip, I've done that on my weekend bike tours. I also use a pay as go Tracfone because the rates are lower than a contract for my needs, and the unused minutes rollover. But for everyday riding there just isn't any need, I like the idea of figuring out how to fix something on the road and getting back home again on my own without contacting my "mommy" to come get me.
