I usually mount mine on the rim so they rotate in a circle.

For tractors, they say that one should mount the "chevrons" so that the points hit first, and thus the mud (water) gets squished out the sides.

For the Gators... if they have some central tread, this is probably the case too, but it really doesn't amount to much.
