I remember a few months back, my dad was visiting and I was talking about how I'd gotten a larger torque wrench to go with my smaller one so that I could get the torque right on my bb. He just kind of looked at me and said, "why do you need a torque wrench? In my day, we just tightened it up as tight as we could and went for a ride." Of course it was a different time, but when he was in college in the mid 60's, he hitchhiked one summer most of the way home, then stopped at a sears 100 or so miles from home, bought a bike in a box and an adjustable wrench, put it together and rode the rest of the way home. Different times.
