Thanks guys. All good suggestions. FB, right before I checked back here for an answer a light bulb went on in my head suggesting to me essentially what you proposed. This is an old and very beaten up cable in the area of the pinch bolt and a little above and below. I think your idea may be the right answer. I will change the cable, and hopefully, all will be fine.
