I use to race in the mountains of S Calif, and on some very hot days, I never had an issue where I wish I had a finned brake pad set. The real issue with overheating isn't the pads its the rims getting so hot they blow the tube, though I never had that happen either because I was taught early on to hit the brakes hard for about 5 seconds and then release which he called stab braking, which I found out years later semi trucks do the same thing when descending steep grades. So personally I think the finned pad set is more about looks then functionality.
