The hardship of the trek is what pulls at peoples' heartstrings. I'm not earning an income, not going to be eating great food, and going to be sleeping (mostly) uncomfortably. My hope is that people will interpret what I'm doing as a big contribution to help people in our community, and that they do the same with donations. In addition, there are few people who bike across North America. We're connecting with media outlets to get the word out about the trek and the fundraising. This happened just over a month ago, and while support from the community, service clubs, and businesses has been very strong and supportive, it's important to keep the wheels turning on the fundraising. At the very least, the blog will be a consistent piece for people to follow for ~3 months. Ideally we will get in touch with media outlets who continue to do stories or updates.
If the cost of your trip is paid fully by you, and all contributions go directly to the affected families, this could be a worthwhile cause. However, I'll bet you could raise more funds and awareness by having a carwash in your local community every day for 3 months for the same amount of time spent riding, with all proceeds going directly to the needy.
