I see Speedplays don't get any love here. They do feel weird, like you're sliding on ice, and I can see how it wouldn't work for a rider used to rigidity, but all that free float saved my bicycling life.
I have a problem from an old athletic ankle injury that was poorly set, causing my right foot to splay out. I was riding Campy Record pedals (original chrome) with straps, clips and shoe cleats on my 60's Mondia for years, and the rigidly planted foot played havoc with the articulation of the ankle, knee and hip. The Speedplays (along with shoe wedges and pedal spacers from Bike Fit Systems) allowed my foot to rotate in its own crooked way without forcing the ankle and knee into an unnatural motion. Years of an aching leg were gone in days. I've had them on every bike I've had since then.
