Bikes: old ones

At my grandparents' house, i found one of these Iverson road bikes in storage. The drivetrain looks like it needs work, and the wheels have some corrosion. Tires are dry-rotten.

My question is, even though these are infamous cheap bikes, would it be worth it at all to just turn it into a beater singlespeed errand bike? Or is it not even worth the effort?
...not worth it. Probably has 26x1 3/8 tyres, which while findable, can be problematic to obtain. The single speed aspect is appealing, and certainly it will work for this, but the brakes were (on most models) kinda low end. Iverson made/marketed a lot of different bikes over the years. Some of them are probably worth renovation as working bikes as you suggest, most are not.
