Don't be afraid to take the lane. If you're going around a hard right turn (in the US), you'll be more visible to drivers coming up behind you if you're near the center line than if you're cowering on the fog line. You can relax back towards the center of the lane after you get past the turn (but not too quickly, unless you can see there's no oncoming traffic so overtaking drivers can swerve safely around you).
