There are special leather conditioners that equestrians use for saddles and tack. The Brooks saddle on my DL-1 was very dried out when I first got it. I used a conditioner ( can't think of the brand name right now) and it worked great.
The leather is nice and supple now. It's not soap, it's conditioner.
