Brilliant! Thanks for this thought, dsbrantjr. As I had the bike up on the stand, and was pedaling to see if I could feel anything (nope), checking the cranks for play, etc., etc., I thought about your suggestion, and sure enough, there was a link that was partly broken (rivet had come off one of the outer plates).
