As mentioned earlier, I have to wonder, what does errantlinguist mean about the crank not holding the chain? It sounds more like the chain skipping a tooth on the FW, which means a stretched chain and possibly a worn FW too. If the problem is just worn teeth on a chainring, why not just determine the BCD and get a new chainring?
