Riding a road bike without clipped in pedals and shoes?

Anyone ride their road bike with pedals that you don't clip into? I got into riding three years ago and really love it. After two hybrid bikes (a touring type of hybrid and then a "fast" hybrid) in that two year period, I figured it was time to move up to road cycling. I purchased a great road bike on May 31st and have put 350 miles on it so far. My question is concerning being clipped in. While I don't mind the clipped in experience while riding, I have fallen twice when stopping at a cross walk / intersection. I've had some trouble unclipping my feet from the pedal. Are a few tumbles to be expected when learning how to ride clipped in? Or should I ditch the shoes and pedals and just put a pair of regular pedals on with my sneakers? As a footnote : I ride the bike trails in my area and seldom ride in the road (not saying I have no plan to in the future. I just consider the trails safer to ride). Not sure if this figures into the equation but I thought I'd mention it.

Thanks for anyone's experience or helpful suggestions in advance.
