I spent my first road riding summer on a rather costly, borrowed Specialzed Roubaix. He was running SPD pedals and even lent me a pair of shoes. I did two rides with them and decided I needed to get my "sea legs" before going clipless again.
Rode 500 or so miles on flats then bought my own SPD-SL pedals and shoes...I was very happy I made that move. To me, not riding clipless now feels wrong. It gets me all of the time when riding my comfort bike with the family...heavy, flexy shoes on those pedals...I even accidentally kick my feet off the pedal sometimes not paying attention. If my 6 year old didn't ride so slow and sporadically, I'd pop clipless pedals on that bike too.
