That depends on the design and implementation of the motor... When I ride my bike without using assist it feels just like a regular bike, just the other day I rode my BionX 350 DD hub motor set up without using the assist at all for 49Km through what were some fairly big hills, to me anyways... 433M assent total, 1781 calories used and I felt like I was just riding a normal bike, there was no noticeable resistance at all from the motor...

I imagine that would have been a great workout !!! being into keeping fit ,,,drag experienced from riding a DD without using assist would not deter me from getting one . A comfortable amount as opposed to "hard work" would need to be determined .
