Tiagra Front Triple is finicky

I have a Specialized Allez with Shimano 105 9-speed rear and a triple chain ring, Shimano Flight Deck brifters. This is a new bike (to me) and I am frequently losing the chain when shifting from middle to granny. My past experience has always been two-ring cranks. I have done all of the normal checks and adjustments:

1. Checked & adjusted derailleur position and alignment
2. Re-tensioned cables
3. Checked & adjusted upper and lower set screws

On the bike stand I noticed there seems to be excessive chain whip when doing that down shift quickly, which precedes the chain falling off.

Am I just a dumb newbie and need to re-learn how to shift, or is there something I can do to make this work better?
